Friends of Murphy Public Library have a new idea for their potlucks: get together for lunch! This year between spring and fall the Friends have divided their usual dinners into two lunches and two dinners.

The first potluck lunch is this coming Tuesday, April 26 at 12 noon in the library’s meeting room.   Librarian Jeff Murphy and assistant librarian Melissa Barker will be there along with Friends members.

The cost of membership in the Friends is $10 per year. This fun group works to enhance the library and fill its bookshelves. Everyone is welcome to bring their favorite potluck dish and meet their book and movie-loving neighbors.

Then come back on Wednesday, April 27 at 11:00 a.m. in the library meeting room, Friends’ member Nicky Grant will teach a Tech Class: Why Upgrade to Windows 10?

The Friends are also holding their spring Trash to Treasures Yard Sale the following week on Friday, May 6 from 9 to 2 and Saturday, May 7, from 9 to 1. Donations are gladly accepted anytime. For more information, call 837-2417. Want to volunteer?  Come by the library and sign up — we would love to have your help!

Book lovers know that turning over the last page of a good novel means another mystery, history or blistery tome is waiting in the wings. It’s the same with chili. This Thursday the Murphy Library has a treat for the chili lovers who left the Cherokee County Chamber’s Chili Cook Off last Saturday with smiles on their faces.2014ChiliLunchJeffMurphy10-15

Friends of Murphy Library are holding a Chili Lunch and Bake Sale this Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Librarian Jeff Murphy is cooking his special chili, and the Friends are baking up fresh artisan bread to go with it. Tickets are $7 and may be purchased in advance. Water and coffee are included.

The Bake Sale will offer homemade cookies, cakes, bread and maybe a pie or two. The Scholastic Book Sale shelves are holding treasures throughout the library. The Cooking Supplies Sale can be found in the breezeway. Call 837-2417 for details and to donate to the bake sale.

Friends’ vice president, Bob MacLean and his wife Gail have made a special donation to Friends of Murphy Library’s Silent Auction, August 9, – this Friday! – from 10 a.m. til 2p.m. — a trail bike in perfect condition!!

Read what Bob has to say:

“The bike is a Mongoose sycamore trail bike with 21 gears, air pump, water bottle, helmet, tools and toolbag with riding gloves.  It has had very little use since bought several years ago and is in excellent condition. Based on today’s market I would estimate its value at least at $300.”

Now take a look.  Then scroll down to see more Silent Auction treasures.

Friends’ member Winkie Stiles has been busy making beautiful baskets for the August 9 Silent Auction.  She has completed 10 baskets so far, and has 4 more in process!!

She fills each basket with donated items and purchases more to complete each to perfection.  Also look for the ones volunteer Di Moumousis has made with the Russian dolls.
Here are three baskets:

Murphy librarian Jeff Murphy often sees young visitors who have problems reading.  He has found that audio books have been a lifesaver for some.

“Sometimes we have a child who does not read well but has to read a book for school,” he says.  When he gives them an audio version of the book, it not only helps them keep up in school, it gets them interested in reading.

This is why funds raised at Friends of Murphy Library’s August 9 Silent Auction will be used to purchase audio books for young readers. The funds will also purchase audio books for adults, and foreign language audio books.  The auction runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.2013SilentAuctionpictures

Gift baskets are always popular at Friends of Murphy Library’s silent auctions and on July 2, members of the Friends met to discuss the various baskets and the goodies to be included this year.  Everyone chose a theme, such as a basket of coffee items or one for tea. Another will hold apple products. For travelers, there are gifts from Mexico.  And a golf basket will be waiting for the bidding to begin.

The Murphy Library’s Silent Auction fundraiser is scheduled for Friday, August 9th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m in the library meeting room.  There will also be a Kitchen/Cooking Supply & Cookbook Sale the same day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the breezeway at the rear of the library.   Donations for these fundraisers to support the Murphy Public Library are appreciated and can be dropped off anytime.  Call 837-2417 for details.

Friends of Murphy Public Library met recently to discuss themes for gift baskets to be included in the Friends’ Silent Auction on August 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Auction volunteers include Karen Francis, Jeff Murphy, Winkie Stiles, Elo-ly Bailey, Jan Ruiz, Nora King, Carey Randall, Bonnie Allen, Donna Munizzi, Micki Singer and Connie Long (from left). Donations are welcome anytime.

Many thanks to Louise MacDonald, Jan Ruiz, Linda Tempke, Martha Penz, Gail MacLean, Carey Randall, and Nora King for volunteering, and to Jo Ann Allen, Sharon Francis, Sammie Simpson, Margie King, Kathy Hoyt, Diane Pelczynski, Leslie Beaster, and Michelle Campbell for selling their crafts at Friends of Murphy Library’s Craft and Book Sale last week.

Special appreciation goes to Donna Getch and Donna Cook in the Cherokee Scout’s advertising department for their excellent advice.

Our wonderful community made this event a success and local students are the winners. Proceeds will provide awards for the Cherokee County Middle School Spelling Bee later this fall.

Nora King brought her friends who volunteered to re-organize the books in the back breezeway.  They made it fun and easy to browse through the shelves and discover treasures.

Like to quilt?  Knit?  Paint? Keep a scrapbook? We got supplies for those crafts and lots more.

Friends of Murphy Public Library are holding our annual Craft and Craft Supplies Sale on August 2 and 3, Thursday and Friday, from 9 to 2 in the library’s meeting room, as well as a blowout Books in the Breezeway Sale in the back of the library. This year wehave added crafts along with the supplies for sale. You might find holiday gifts ahead of time.

Local crafters sell their own items and donate a portion of their proceeds to the Friends’ Spelling Bee fund. Monies raised reward students in the Cherokee County Schools 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Spelling Bee. The students love the spelling bee and we love to see them learn.

“I want to help get more books for the library,” Hiwassee Dam resident Lili Molina told Murphy Library head librarian Jeff Murphy during a recent visit.  When asked her age, she emphatically stated, “I’m still four.” Her parents Becky and Mario Molina encourage her reading, but her interest in fundraising is all her own idea.

When Murphy heard Lili’s comment he pulled out baseballs and mitts to show her how willing he was to play ball her way.  The baseball items and lots more will be in Friends of Murphy Library’s Trash to Treasures Yard Sale this Friday and Saturday, May 4 and 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Funds raised will help the library do what Lili and many other readers want:  buy more books for all ages.

Donations are still being accepted.  Call 837-2417 for details.
