Ask Judy and Bob Grove about their grandchildren and their eyes light up.  But if the conversation turns to finding abandoned baby birds, they know how to care for them too.  So when the Groves visited with Friends of Murphy Library at their May 18 potluck, Fundraising chair Nora King knew just what to give them.  She handed them a handmade birdhouse for their feathered friends and a “Wizard of Oz” gift set for their granddaughters, small tokens for their generosity to the library.

The Friends are hoping to raise $9,000 this year for the purchase of new nonfiction books for the children and teen section of the library.  An updated set of books on each of the states is first on the list.

Donations have been coming in but more are needed.  Crafts, antiques, and unique items such as gift certificates may be brought to the library anytime or to the Friends’ room at Valley River Merchants on Thursdays from 10:30 to 1 p.m.  Call 837-2417 for details.

Those are Friends’ president Nora King’s words this morning after our annual auction last night at Bob Grove Auctions.  She said we raised approximately $8,500.  This is a record amount for the library and will be used meeting a matching grant for new computers from the Gates Foundation.
“I cannot tell a lie–I’m tired but I am elated!  Thanks to each of you for your participation” says Nora.  And Nora deserves so much credit back to her and her husband Larry.  She worked tirelessly calling on the generosity of businesses and friends to made donations to the auction.  She has the manners of a good Southern upbringing, along with intelligence and strength.  Many, many thanks, Nora.   And many thanks again to the generosity of Bob and Judy Grove, their staff and all the donors and bidders who made this successful.
