A young man in Chad loves to dance even with a bad leg but when he needs money for his sick stepfather, he loses his rhythm and goes to the dark side. The Murphy Library is showing Film Movement’s Grigris, this Thursday at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. It has romance, crime and lots of thrills. Running time is 101 minutes and the film is shown in French and Arabic with English subtitles.

The cinematography captures the African nation of Chad magnificently, whether in the city or a tiny country village.

Call the library at 837-2417 for details.

Joe DiMaggio was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. So was Ted Williams. In fact there was no one left to play baseball, until someone decided to start the All-American Girls Baseball League. It was a winner.

The Murphy Public Library is showing A League of Their Own,  the 1992 film about the WWII girls’ baseball teams in honor of all women athletes, but especially to honor our own Cherokee County girls’ softball teams.

The film will be screened Thursday at 6 p.m. and is rated PG. Running time is 128 minutes. Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell and Madonna star. Call 837-2417 for details.  And remember, THERE IS NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!

There is also a question (from my husband, Jerry) about whether this team played softball or hardball.  Actually, according to the following study, it started as softball, and gradually got harder and harder….

Friends’ vice president, Bob MacLean and his wife Gail have made a special donation to Friends of Murphy Library’s Silent Auction, August 9, – this Friday! – from 10 a.m. til 2p.m. — a trail bike in perfect condition!!

Read what Bob has to say:

“The bike is a Mongoose sycamore trail bike with 21 gears, air pump, water bottle, helmet, tools and toolbag with riding gloves.  It has had very little use since bought several years ago and is in excellent condition. Based on today’s market I would estimate its value at least at $300.”

Meanwhile volunteer Nora King and her compatriots have spread out the goodies in the back breezeway of the library with Cooking and Kitchen Supplies and Book Sales: wonderful cookbooks have been donated, and nonfiction and fiction books fill the bookcases.

Don’t miss either of these sales!

Friends’ board member Karen Francis has donated one of artist Kym Miller’s Underground Railroad messenger dolls. This has a special meaning to the arts community and those who loved her art since Miller passed away recently.

Gift baskets are always popular at Friends of Murphy Library’s silent auctions and on July 2, members of the Friends met to discuss the various baskets and the goodies to be included this year.  Everyone chose a theme, such as a basket of coffee items or one for tea. Another will hold apple products. For travelers, there are gifts from Mexico.  And a golf basket will be waiting for the bidding to begin.

The Murphy Library’s Silent Auction fundraiser is scheduled for Friday, August 9th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m in the library meeting room.  There will also be a Kitchen/Cooking Supply & Cookbook Sale the same day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the breezeway at the rear of the library.   Donations for these fundraisers to support the Murphy Public Library are appreciated and can be dropped off anytime.  Call 837-2417 for details.
