What a wonderful time to do spring cleaning!  That’s because Friends of Murphy Library are holding a Trash to Treasures and Book Sale on May 6 and 7, Friday and Saturday from 9 to 2.

Clean your closets and help out the library.  We appreciate any and every donation for this sale.  Items may be dropped off anytime at the library starting this Friday, April 1.

Katie O’Connor is five years old and loves books.  She and her parents, Matt and Jenn O’Connor were visiting her grandparents, Murphy residents Mike and Marcia Smith, when they stopped by the Murphy Library.

Five-year-old Katie O’Connor reads one of the new books at the Murphy Library purchased with funds raised at the Friends of Murphy Library yard and book sale in May. Katie was visiting the library with her parents Matt and Jenn O’Connor during their recent vacation. More fundraisers are coming up.

The library has been buying new nonfiction books for its children’s section recently with funds raised at the May yard sale and book sale.  Katie found a new book about the color yellow full of everything yellow, from bananas to parakeets.

Librarian Jeff Murphy noted that he ordered new books from Crabtree Press and also from Amazon.  A young person (and even an adult) could spend a hot summer afternoon reading about France, China, the color blue, the Hudson River, and even….vampires!  Just ask the librarians where the new children’s books are.

More fundraising events are on the calendar.  The Craft Supplies Sale (for the Spelling Bee fund) and Book Sale take place at the library on July 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The annual auction is at Bob Grove Auctions on August 7.

Nantahala Regional Youth Services librarian Sarah Arnaudin and her reading buddy Roberta the orangutan receive a check from Barbara Roche at Brothers Restaurant for Friends' Community Night proceeds. Brothers' also sell the Friends' cookbook, Cooking by the Book, to benefit Cherokee County Schools annual Spelling Bee.

Friends of Murphy Library are holding the annual Craft Supplies Sale on July 23 and 24 in the library’s meeting room from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a book sale in the Bookmobile area.

Local crafters sell their excess craft supplies and donate a portion of their proceeds to the Spelling Bee fund to pay for prizes in the Cherokee County Schools Spelling Bee for 6th, 7th and 8th graders.

There is no rental charge and any donation to the library is voluntary.  The library will also accept donations of supplies to sell at the library craft supplies table.

Call Julie Chautin at 837-4598 to sign up or email jul200@aol.com.

Here are two dates to remember:  May 7 & 8, 2010 and August 7, 2010.

Friends of Murphy Library are holding a yard sale on May 7 and 8 at the library.  Now is the time to start cleaning out your closets.  Besides donating items to the sale, you will be assured of space for new treasures.  And there are always good deals to be had.

Then, on Saturday, August 7, the Friends’ will hold their annual auction.  Librarian Jeff Murphy can’t wait to see what handcrafted items, antiques or gift certificates will be donated this year.
Anyone who’s been there knows it’s more than an auction – it’s a demonstration of the kindness of the community of Murphy and Cherokee County and how much they love their library.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at both these sales.  Donations can be brought by the library.

volunter Jacob Dorn arranges the refreshment table at Friends of Murphy Library's 2009 auction. The fundraising group has scheduled the next auction for August 7, 2010.

And — there’s always good food at the refreshment table!
