Friends’ volunteer Linda Perry previews crafts and supplies donated for sale at Murphy Library June 19 and 20.

Seven-year-old Gracey Sneed is a first grader at Martins Creek Elementary School and loves to read. She visited the Murphy Library recently with her father Eric Sneed and previewed donated items for the Friends of Murphy Library Trash to Treasures Sale.

The Trash to Treasures Sale takes place this Friday, May 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the library’s meeting room along with a book sale in the back of the library.

While a funny red animal in a gold vase caught Gracey’s eye, buyers will find a lot more on the tables and under them. Funds raised will help the library buy more books and media for all ages. Perhaps even more of Gracey’s favorites, the Junie B. Jones books and the Katie Kazoo series. Call 837-2417 for details.

Friends of Murphy Public LIbrary raised close to $2,500 at our August 9 Silent Auction and Cooking Supplies/Cookbook/Book Sales.  These funds will allow the library to buy all sorts of audio books, fiction, nonfiction, children’s books , and audio books teaching foreign languages.

Many thanks to all the Friends Board of Directors, committee chairs, and especially, those Friends’ members who make sure they come by every fundraiser and pitch right in to help.  Thanks also to the library lovers,  artists, craftspeople, local businesses and those businesses farther away who all donated wonderful items.

Friends’ vice president, Bob MacLean and his wife Gail have made a special donation to Friends of Murphy Library’s Silent Auction, August 9, – this Friday! – from 10 a.m. til 2p.m. — a trail bike in perfect condition!!

Read what Bob has to say:

“The bike is a Mongoose sycamore trail bike with 21 gears, air pump, water bottle, helmet, tools and toolbag with riding gloves.  It has had very little use since bought several years ago and is in excellent condition. Based on today’s market I would estimate its value at least at $300.”

Meanwhile volunteer Nora King and her compatriots have spread out the goodies in the back breezeway of the library with Cooking and Kitchen Supplies and Book Sales: wonderful cookbooks have been donated, and nonfiction and fiction books fill the bookcases.

Don’t miss either of these sales!

Friends’ board member Karen Francis has donated one of artist Kym Miller’s Underground Railroad messenger dolls. This has a special meaning to the arts community and those who loved her art since Miller passed away recently.

Murphy librarian Jeff Murphy often sees young visitors who have problems reading.  He has found that audio books have been a lifesaver for some.

“Sometimes we have a child who does not read well but has to read a book for school,” he says.  When he gives them an audio version of the book, it not only helps them keep up in school, it gets them interested in reading.

This is why funds raised at Friends of Murphy Library’s August 9 Silent Auction will be used to purchase audio books for young readers. The funds will also purchase audio books for adults, and foreign language audio books.  The auction runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.2013SilentAuctionpictures
