German drama on Spanish island of Ibiza

Posted on: August 21, 2017

Jo is a 25-year-old DJ from Berlin who moves to the Spanish island of Ibiza in the 1990’’s to work in a club called Amnesia, a place to forget your troubles and dance to the latest electronic music. One day he meets a neighbor of his, Martha. She has lived alone on the island for forty years. Unbeknownst to Jo, Martha is also German, but she has refused to acknowledge that or even speak her native language. Instead, they speak English.

The Murphy Library is showing the monthly Film Movement selection, Amnesia, this Thursday at 6 p.m. Running time is 96 minutes. The film is not rated but would not be appropriate for children. The film is in French, German, Spanish and Russian with subtitles in English.

Martha has her own self-induced amnesia due to the horrors she encountered in Germany during World War II. She wants nothing to do with her country. Nevertheless, she is drawn into Jo’s world of music and even joins his family for dinner when they visit, but soon the conversations get heated and memories come back.

Call the library at 837-2417.
