Classic steel mill movie at library

In the 1870’s, a Pittsburgh steel worker’s daughter goes to work as a maid for the factory’s owner, and there she falls in love with the owner’s son. Unfortunately he is engaged to someone else.

The Murphy Library is showing The Valley of Decision, a classic Oscar-winning 1945 film starring Greer Garson and Gregory Peck on Thursday at 6 p.m. Running time is 119 minutes and the film is not rated but would be appropriate for history-minded students.

The 19th century factories had wealthy owners and poor mill workers, but there were unions too, in many ways like today. All these characters can create tension, but perhaps be saved by romantic feelings.
