Math geniuses soar in library

Posted on: June 26, 2017

STEM is big news in education these days as elementary, middle and high schools promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.   Back in the 1950’s and 60’s, women were not often encouraged to study and take on STEM jobs.

This Thursday at 6 p.m, the Murphy Public Library is showing Hidden Figures, an award-winning 2016 film about the math geniuses working for NASA in 1961. The film is rated PG and running time is 127 minutes. Starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, and Kevin Costner.

Sixty years ago, no one would have guessed that a group of African-American women mathematicians could put the first man into space. All that has changed, thanks to their efforts, and to today’s educators.   Now female scientists, tech specialists, engineers and mathematicians are a normal occurrence.

The film was made throughout Georgia, in East Point, Georgia, (Katherine’s home), Morehouse College, Atlanta Georgia, (exterior scenes), Canton, Georgia, (Exterior of Library),  Atlanta, Georgia and Monroe, Georgia.
