Historical drama in 1930’s China

Posted on: October 10, 2016

The year is 1936 and a former American diplomat lives in Shanghai, China. The world is in upheaval, especially since the Japanese Army is invading wherever they can. However, the diplomat’s life has already been taken over: he has lost his wife, his daughter, and his sight to terrorist bombings. Then he meets a young Russian woman refugee and perhaps he will smile again.

This Thursday at 6:00 p.m., the Murphy Public Library is showing the Merchant & Ivory film, The White Countess, a historical drama with romance starring Ralph Fiennes, Natasha Richardson, Vanessa Redgrave and Lynn Redgrave. Running time is 135 minutes and the film is rated PG-13.

The young woman has fled the aftermath of the Russian Revolution with her beloved daughter, her aunt and her much-reviled mother-in-law. But life is no better for her since she now must work at any job she can to feed her family.
