Library applauds a music teacher and her students who won’t give up

Posted on: April 8, 2016

Wes Craven directed Music of the Heart, the next Murphy Library movie, but it’s not one of his “slasher” films, it has violins and determined students. He tells the true story of a teacher who starts a violin program in New York City’s East Harlem schools and fights to keep it going.

The library is showing Music of the Heart, Thursday. April 14 at 6:00 p.m. Running time is 124 minutes and the film is rated PG. It stars Meryl Streep, Aidan Quinn, Gloria Estefan, Angela Bassett, and Cloris Leachman.

Roberta Guaspari is a newly divorced mother with two young sons when she takes the teaching job in the woefully underprivileged schools of East Harlem. Her students are young and she is tough and together they learn to make music. Then, after ten years of success, the school board guts the program funding.

How will these young musicians learn so they play at Carnegie Hall? Maybe someone needs to contact Itzak Perlman, Isaac Stern, Mark O’Connor and other renown violinists and see if they will help.

Don’t miss seeing how this plays out.  Call the library at 837-2417.
