Guitar music and great songs are the heart of library movie this Thursday, January 15

Posted on: January 11, 2015

If you’re into guitar music and great songwriting, mixed with folk and rock, AND an unforgettable story, watch how they give this movie heart and soul. A Detroit guitarist named Sixto Rodriguez cuts two albums during the 1970’s, and although they are critically well received, few are sold. Rodriguez drops from sight, but years later he has become a rock star — in South Africa.

This Thursday at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. the Murphy Library is showing Searching for Sugar Man, a 2012 documentary that won 40 awards around the world, including an Oscar. Running time is 86 minutes and the film is rated PG-13.

A visitor to the U.S. had purchased Rodriguez’ albums and taken them back to South Africa. Over the years the albums were reprinted and the music constantly played on the radio, but no word came from him and rumors concluded the singer had died.

It wasn’t true. Come see how a South African record storeowner and a filmmaker find him, alive. Call the library at 837-2417.
