Italy is the place where two immigrants find their way – this Thursday at the Murphy Library

Posted on: December 15, 2013

Rade Serbedzija is a Yugoslavian actor, Tao Zhao is a Chinese actress and Andrea Segre is an Italian documentary filmmaker making his first feature film. Together they offer a poignant glimpse into the struggles immigrants face in Italy.

The Murphy Library is showing their film, the Film Movement selection, Shun Li and the Poet, this Thursday at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. It is not rated but would be appropriate for teens. Running time is 100 minutes. In Italian and Mandarin with subtitles in English. Filmed in Chioggia, near Venice.

Shun Li is a Chinese immigrant working in a textile factory to pay off her broker so her young son can come to Italy also. The work is hard, but soon she is moved to a small fishing village to run a local bar. There, among the locals, is an older fisherman who is formerly from Yugoslavia. When he befriends her, gossip threatens them both.
