Special film chronicles young South African boy’s story — Thursday at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Posted on: November 18, 2013

A young boy is anxiously awaiting his mother’s return to their remote Zulu village in South Africa, when a truck pulls up. It is carrying his mother’s coffin.

How could this happen to a boy named Lucky?

The Murphy Library is showing its Film Movement selection, Lucky, this Thursday at 4 pm. and 6 p.m. Running time is 100 minutes and the film would not be appropriate for children. In Zulu, Hindi and English with English subtitles.

Even in the face of tragedy, Lucky has a dream to go to school. He soon leaves his village for the big city to find his uncle. However, nothing is easy for this orphan, and then he meets a feisty, elderly Indian woman who lives in his uncle’s neighborhood.

The BBC calls this “a wonderful little gem,” and it is.
