This is a film with much sadness and yet when Javier Bardem’s character Uxbal smiles at his young son and daughter, all you see is a father who adores his children. Bardem’s smile is not to be missed.

Uxbal deals in small time crime to earn a living.  He helps organize factories where Chinese immigrants sleep on the floor and make illegal copies of high fashion designs for others to sell on the streets.  He pays off the cops, and when the street sellers are also caught selling drugs, he tries to save them.

And then there are his children.  His wife is deeply troubled mentally and Uxbal provides all the care for the children.  They are his joy.  Then he is stricken with a deadly disease and all he can wonder is who will care for his children when he’s gone.
