Detective Film next up at Murphy Library Thursday

Posted on: January 17, 2011

World War II army veteran ‘Easy” Rawlins is trying to find a job in Los Angeles.  It was hard enough being a black guy in Uncle Sam’s army.   Now the war’s over and it’s twice as hard getting any work.

The Murphy Library is showing the 1995 film based on writer Walter Mosely’s popular detective series about Ezekial ‘Easy’ Rawlins.  It stars Denzel Washington and will be shown Thursday at 3:15 p.m. and again at 6 p.m. The film is rated R and runs 102 minutes.

When Easy meets a white guy who needs help finding a missing woman, he is happy for the bread he’s going to make.  That’s before he runs into politicians and police who set a standard for how low they can go. At least he can listen to music by T-Bone Walker, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk amid the murder and mayhem.

The Murphy Library also carries several of Walter Mosely’s ‘Easy’ Rawlins detective books.  Look for “Gone Fishin’” and “Bad Boy Brawly Brown.”  Call 837-2417 for details about the film.
