Songwriter Leonard Cohen documentary Thursday at Murphy Library

Posted on: January 8, 2011

Leonard Cohen is a poet, singer and songwriter whose songs are like Appalachian ballads.  Some are mournful.  Others are joyful.  All are glorious.   My favorites are  “Hallelujah,” “Suzanne,” and “Anthem.”  Heck, all his songs are my favorites.

The Murphy Library is showing a 2005 documentary about the Montreal-born writer which includes these and other songs.  Director Lian Lunson highlights performances from a tribute to Cohen at the Sidney Opera House.  Rufus Wainwright, his sister Martha and his late mother Kate McGarrigle sing Cohen’s haunting songs along with Beth Orton, Jarvis Cocker and others.

The film is rated PG-13 and will be screened Thursday at 3:15 p.m. and again at 6 p.m.  Running time is 105 minutes.  Call 837-2417 for details.
