Louisiana Zydeco music wraps it arms around a sweet German and shows him the bayous

Posted on: June 7, 2010

In a little German town, an accordion player is captivated by the charms of Zydeco music.  Soon he is cooking a Cajun meal.  And then, with the help of his friends, he answers the siren call and heads to Louisiana.

The Murphy Library is showing the 2004 film “Schultze Gets the Blues” Thursday at 6 p.m., a quiet German rhapsody on Louisiana, its people, and the music that helps them get through tough times.  It will make you smile when you see those beautiful shores and waterways once more.  The film is rated PG and runs 114 minutes.  In German with subtitles in English.

Schultze has just retired from a German salt mine.  Not of his own choice.  But now he has time to practice playing polkas on his accordion. Then one night he turns on the radio and hears music that almost sounds like a polka.  The song, however, has a little more skip to it.  Oh me, oh my, oh, Schultze has discovered zydeco from the bayou.
