This week’s words for the 2010 Cherokee County Spelling Bee are from Latin, and can be found on the National Spelling Bee web site, www.myspellit.com.

Mmm, these are quite tricky! Spelling Bee is in the UK now. I think it’s the 2nd year for the Times Championship. Personally I’d get far too nervous to ever attempt it!

Thanks for comment – we are in Murphy, a small friendly town in far western North Carolina where the mountains are misty and the children are very smart. The school district’s spelling bee has been going on a long time for 6th grade (11 years old) but our volunteer group from the local library started offering incentives four years ago (a commmemorative dollar coin for any student who participates and US$100, $50 and $25 to the top three winners. And the 7th and 8th graders wanted to join. The best part of a spelling bee is that you are holding an academic game for students who aren’t afraid to use their brains; who know that study will help them win. And they are cool and collected as they take their turn. – Julie
